Safety promotion

4.1 Safety training and education

Management need to demonstrate this, and this is achieved by;

  1. Providing the Safety Manager with required training and that they are appropriately qualified
  2. Providing all staff with SMS training.
  3. Consider providing other key personnel with further general SMS training. (Link to further SMS training)
  4. Consider providing other key personnel with further specific SMS education. (Link to specific SMS training)
  5. Providing staff with HF training (Link to HF training)
  6. Provide appropriate re-currency training to refresh the key points from SMS induction training.

The above relate to training required for the SMS to function.  Further education for consideration is;

​Many tertiary institutions also offer advanced SMS education and qualifications as part of Aviation degrees. Examples include:

4.2 Safety communication

This element is perhaps the easiest to implement, and the hardest to do effectively.

For this element management must;

  1. Advise the workforce on SMS implementation progress and other developments
  2. Provide a culture of open two way communication throughout the organisation.
  3. Implement the following (from the SMS Manual) as applicable to the size and complexity of the organisation.
