Defence scenarios
Organisation 1
RAAF 63 Squadron is a heavy lift stategic and tactical transport capability. It has been tasked with support for the Australian Antarctic Division as part of Southern Discovery. This includes use of JPADS for support to the AAD Antarctic traverse capabilty.
Considerations and challenges include:
- Intermittent CPDLC when south of 65S and below TL
- Unreliable AAD ICT infrastructure
- Fuel limitation and possible requirement for AAR
- Antarctic weather
- AAD DZ personnel
Organisation 2
The Army 10 Aviation Regiment is assigned the to support 3rd Brigade by providing airborne reconnaissance in operations using a relatively new capability. The missions flown are exercise only at this stage however the current proving period will lead to operational capability in the future.
Considerations and challenges include
- Tasking by infantry officers without aviation experience
- Cultural differences regarding crew duty requirements
- Use of infantry ORs as spotters on aircraft
- Perception the Squadron is being used as a ‘nursery’ for junior pilots
- Inexperience on type
Organisation 3
RAN 123 SQN maintains a small maintenance section on AWD HMAS Hobart to support Seahawks helicopters. The helicopters are undergoing modifications to integrate with the Aegis weapons system while being used operationally as well as testing for the new technology.
Considerations and challenges include
- Third party persons carrying out work on the aircraft
- Challenges of new technology in an old aircraft
- Not enough personnel for the tasking
- ‘Personality’ issues within the section leading to PM actions
- Culture of poor supervision
Feel free to add as required to the scenarios!
